What is Eternal Life?
When Jesus speaks of eternal life, we’re conditioned to think of the afterlife. And while I think this term speaks of heaven, I think this serves as a dual indication for life practices as well. That if you fail to follow His words, you will not have life.
In today’s world, the term “I have no life” or “s/he has no life” applies. Maybe there’s sadness, maybe there’s depression involved. But meaning to say, they’re likely not hearing the words of Jesus. Or better yet, maybe hearing the words, but not practicing what He preaches. There’s a bit of a difference. Kinda like knowing not to eat fast food all the time, but you do it anyway. Or choosing not to exercise.
The principles I hear in any of the readings are things contrary to societal practices. Or so I’ve concluded many years ago. And I’m not sure exactly how to convey this, other than continue to confirm its validity over time. Trust in the Lord.
Considering post-life on Earth, eternal life is also present amongst loved ones that he or she has left.
Communion
We have all grown to think that bread and wine are the body and blood of Jesus. I’ve heard discussions that relegates these to symbols. But regardless, know that with Christ within you lies the greatest source of confidence to proceed with His guidance. That is, to follow the path He set for you whatever the calling may be. And this is not only pertaining to religious works, but utilizing the greatness He has given you. Which should never be ignored.
Comment to begin discussion.
The Reading | Jn 6:51-58
Jesus said to the Jewish crowds:
“I am the living bread that came down from heaven;
whoever eats this bread will live forever;
and the bread that I will give
is my flesh for the life of the world.”The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying,
“How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
Jesus said to them,
“Amen, amen, I say to you,
unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood,
you do not have life within you.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood
has eternal life,
and I will raise him on the last day.
For my flesh is true food,
and my blood is true drink.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood
remains in me and I in him.
Just as the living Father sent me
and I have life because of the Father,
so also the one who feeds on me
will have life because of me.
This is the bread that came down from heaven.
Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died,
whoever eats this bread will live forever.”
